A pensioner was found dead on the Garden of Eden Public Road, East Bank Demerara, (EBD), yesterday morning and police are investigating the circumstances.
The deceased, Suresh Mangru, 70, of Lot 35, Garden of Eden, EBD, was found lying on the road at around 4.30 am yesterday.
Police in a press release stated that Mangru was found some 400 yards away from his home, on the western parapet of the public road.
The man’s body bore injuries to the head and right side consistent with those from a vehicular accident. It is believed that he was a victim of a hit and run accident.
Mohan Sugrim, a nephew told Stabroek News that he was returning home from work around 6 am yesterday when he saw police and a lifeless body on the road. He said he stopped and enquired, only to discover that the deceased was his uncle, and he duly informed the police.
The nephew explained that his uncle lived alone and he would take care of him.
However, he could not explain why the man was out on the road at that hour in the morning.
The family said they are awaiting the results of the post mortem to determine the cause of death before drawing any conclusions.
However, they are puzzled by the fact that there were no signs of an accident at the scene.
The body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting the post mortem examination which is scheduled for next Monday.
