Jason Bhaskaran, the driver who was involved in a two-vehicle smash-up at Coverden, East Bank Demerara (EBD) last year, which resulted in two fatalities, had the charge of causing death dismissed on the grounds of insufficient evidence.
The charge against Bhaskaran, of Strat ‘G’, Timehri Public Road, EBD, stated that on April 17, 2016, at Coverden, he, drove a jeep in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the deaths of Rudolph Bess and Hansranie Persaud.
When Bhaskaran was first brought before the courts he was read two causing death charges, however, during the trial before Magistrate Judy Latchman, the matters were heard as one.
On Tuesday, the court heard, that there was insufficient evidence to prove that Bhaskaran had caused the deaths of Persaud and Bess.
Bess, 23, of 220 Kaneville Gardens, EBD, and Persaud, 16, of 417 Golden Grove, EBD, who was the pillion rider, were returning home on a motorcycle when the SUV, PHH 8034, driven by Bhaskaran slammed into them.
Bhaskaran was driving in the eastern lane and his vehicle flipped several times and hit a Toyota Spacio, PMM 9768 that was being driven by Yolanda Patterson, 42, of Paradise, East Coast Demerara, causing her to lose control of the car.
Bess and Persaud sustained multiple injuries and were later pronounced dead. Patterson sustained a laceration to her head, a fractured shoulder and whiplash injuries to her neck. The accident occurred around 3.50 am on April 17, 2016.
