The Georgetown Cricket Association’s Competition Committee Chairman, Shawn Massiah has indicated to Stabroek Sports that his committee was forced to postpone all cricket action in the City until further notice, citing the inclement weather as the main reason for the decision.
The association had to put on hold a number of scheduled first and second division two-day matches while the ongoing Carib first division T20 tournament was also affected by the seasonal May-June rains.
“We won’t be having any cricket this weekend, the grounds aren’t in suitable conditions due to the rains but if anything, we will play the following weekend once the sun comes out,” Massiah added while expressing optimism about finishing the T20 competition before the rainy seasons takes full effect.
The Carib first division T20 competition is one match away from the semifinals stage where the improving University of Guyana (UG) is scheduled to play the Transport Sports Club (TSC) in the final round of matches in Zone-A.
A win for the Students will assure them a rare place in semifinals of the first division competition while the Police Sports Club will join the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) from zone-A and the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and Everest Cricket Club (ECC) as the qualifying teams from the other zone if the student-athletes fail to register a win against TSC.
Meanwhile, the draws for the Trophy Stall, Star Party Rental first division two-day competition sees Zone-A including DCC, ECC, GCC, MSC, and Police whereas Zone-B comprises of GDF, TSC, GNIC, UG and GYO.
The Noble House seafood’s second division two-day draw, on the other hand, see Zone-A including GNIC, GCC, MSC and Ace warriors while Zone-B includes TSC, DCC, MYO, and Diplomats. Police, GYO, Third class, and Sophia are in Zone-C whereas Zone-D including Everest, GDF, and UG.
The rain also placed a damper on the GCA, Guyana Diabetic Association, PAHO T20 Under-17 competition semifinals which was set for last weekend. Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) was scheduled to play Transport Sports Club (TSC) while the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) was scheduled to play Gandhi Youth Organisation in the other semifinal.
