Police in B Division have launched an investigation after five men were intercepted in a car with an unlicenced pistol, 13 live rounds, a rope, a crowbar, a wig and other items in Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice around 1:30 Saturday morning.
Commander of B Division, Ian Amsterdam confirmed to Stabroek News that one of the men in custody is an ex- policeman.
Amsterdam noted that the men will be charged later in the week as the investigation is still ongoing.
He said, “because of the multiple occupants we have to do more detailed interviews”.
He said that investigators were told that the car, PNN 7770, with the men, was seen circling the area.
The men, ages 33, 29, 27, 26 and 22 of Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice; Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam; Pilot Street, New Amsterdam; Fort Ordinance, East Canje and Dazzell Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara were arrested and the vehicle and items were lodged.
Meanwhile, according to a police source, the ex-cop in custody was let go from the Guyana Police Force in 2015 after being accused of being one of the policemen who allegedly allowed a minibus loaded with cocaine to pass through a roadblock in the Corentyne area. Stabroek News was told that the ex-cop is still before the court in relation to that matter.
The source further told Stabroek News that the ex-cop was the driver of the car that was intercepted by ranks.
The source added that two of the suspects in the car, after seeing the ranks, attempted to run, however, the ranks chased after and apprehended them.
