After almost two years, Colin Alleyne, the man charged with the murder of elderly Montrose caretaker Danrasie Ganesh, was yesterday committed to stand trial.
When the Preliminary Inquiry into the murder charge against Alleyne concluded at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul told the accused that the court had found sufficient evidence for him to stand trial at the High Court before a judge and a jury for the murder of Ganesh.
Before the ruling, Police Prosecutor Ayesha Gibbons submitted that the court should take into consideration the considerable amount of evidence that was produced by police and witnesses’ testimonies.
The court was also reminded that video evidence was presented, showing the accused in the house at the time of the murder.
It was alleged that Alleyne, of 77 Cemetery Road, Timehri, murdered Ganesh on August 1, 2015 at Montrose, East Coast Demerara.
Ganesh’s body was found in a pool of blood in the kitchen of the bottom flat of the two-storey Montrose house, where she had been caretaker for some time. An autopsy revealed that she died as a result of strangulation and brain haemorrhaging reportedly as a result of the severe beating she received at the hands of her killer. The attack was caught on CCTV cameras in the house.
