A Kitty resident was yesterday sworn in as a councillor on the Georgetown Mayor and City Council as a representative of Team Benschop for Mayor.
Jameel Rasul took the oath of office and joined 29 other individuals representing the residents of Georgetown on the council. He took the oath of office in the Town Clerk’s office.
Rasul’s swearing in comes approximately three weeks after the resignation of former Councillor Selwyn Smartt, who had replaced Councillor Salima Bacchus-Hinds, who resigned in September last to further her studies overseas.
The former councillors’ resignations fulfil the party’s plan for giving other members of the party a chance to serve.
Team Benschop for Mayor won a single seat at the March 18, 2016 local government elections and it was the decision of the leader of the party Mark Benschop that the seat will be shared among at least ten members of his party.
Rasul, who was also listed as first-past-the-post representative on the party list had contested Constituency Two (Kitty North, Central, South and Subryanville) in the municipality.
However, he lost to Councillor Carlyle Goring who represents the APNU+AFC coalition on the council.
During the campaign, Rasul had vowed that if he took up office he would advocate for regular cleaning of drains, street lighting, city police bike patrols and community policing.
