Marsha Reece, a Linden clothes vendor, was yesterday charged with trafficking almost 200 grammes of cocaine, which police said she was caught with while trying to escape from a raid.
Reece, 35, of 19 A Victory Valley, Wismar Linden, was read a charge which stated that on May 4, at Linden, she had in her possession 197.6 grammes of cocaine for trafficking. Reece pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to her by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.
According to Reece’s lawyer, Adrian Thompson, on the day in question the police arrested several other persons along with his client but she was the only one charged with the offence. Thompson argued that the drugs were not found on her person, which was evidenced by the police arresting the several other persons. As a result, he argued for his client to be granted bail.
However, Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore objected to Reece being granted bail. Moore told the court that on the day of the find, the police were carrying out a raid, when they saw Reece rushing through her back door with a black bag. The prosecutor said the police gave chase and cornered Reece in the backyard. The black bag was searched and substances, suspected to be cocaine, were found. Moore said the police cautioned Reece and she later admitted to them that she normally sold the drugs. As a result, Reece was arrested and then charged.
Chief Magistrate McLennan, after hearing the submissions, remanded Reece to prison until May 17, when the case will be called at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
