A fifty-five-year-old Crabwood Creek woman is now dead after she allegedly stabbed herself once in the abdomen with a knife, following an argument with her husband.
However, relatives of the deceased, Charmoney Charlie, also known as ‘Pillow,’ of Grant 1803, Crabwood Creek, are claiming that the woman’s life could have been saved, had doctors at the Skeldon Hospital paid more attention to her, when she first visited the health institution for assistance.
Charlie’s sister-in-law and next door neighbour, Tamini Lakhraj, 49, told Stabroek News, that around 11 pm last Friday, Charlie ran over to her house and allegedly told her that she had stabbed herself because “she disgust” at her situation at home.
Lakhraj stated that she pleaded with Charlie to go to the hospital, however she refused. The woman said after insisting, they finally took her to the Skeldon Hospital, on Saturday afternoon, the following day.
She said, when they arrived at the hospital, Charlie met with the doctor on duty, and to the family’s surprise, the stab wound was reportedly not treated.
“It just had one doctor, he left up she shirt, and watch the cut, and he give she one injection and tablet and send her home,” Lakhraj said. “He give she paper to collect more tablet on Monday,” she added.
Lakhraj then relayed that the woman passed away at home, early Monday morning.
“Me brother [Charlie’s husband] been ah work and by rain fall, he had to come home back and when he come he say he see she fall down next to the safe (cupboard), and he start call me fah go, and then we see she dead and lef deh,” Lakhraj said. She further noted, “If the doctor did tell we wah happen, we could ah carry she New Amsterdam [Hospital], but them nah tell abie nothing, them just give she injection and tablet, and send she home.”
According to Lakhraj, the woman was an alcoholic. She explained that Charlie and her husband would fight every time she imbibed, as the man would plead with her not to drink and this always annoyed Charlie.
Meanwhile, investigators have taken Charlie’s husband, Rishee Lakhraj, 62, of Lot 1803 Grant, Crabwood Creek, into custody for questioning.
While relatives are of the opinion that Charlie suffered internal bleeding, which may have led to her death, she was known to have been a healthy person. A post mortem examination will be performed later in the week to determine the actual cause of death.
