The dual carriageway on the Rupert Craig Highway between Ogle and UG (University of Guyana) Road will be closed during the day tomorrow. This is to facilitate the installation of a “modern” arch, at Cummings Lodge, which is being sponsored by the Trinidadian conglomerate ANSA McAl.
Confirming yesterday with Stabroek News, the company’s Managing Director, Beverly Harper explained that Industrial Fabrications [InFab] will commence the installation of the arch tomorrow morning, which will necessitate the closure of traffic through the area from 9 am, until the works are completed. She related that the Ministry of Public Infrastructure had asked the company if they were interested in doing the project for the Independence Anniversary, and they had agreed to execute the work to set up the arch. The arch which spans from the northern side to the southern side of the highway will demarcate the eastern boundary of Georgetown at Cummings Lodge.
While Harper was hesitant to reveal information on the arch itself, she related that it will be “very modern and extremely large and looks stunning.” She also added that, at that point in time, she was unable to provide the amount which had been spent by the company so far, whilst pointing out that “if all goes well,” an inauguration for the arch, which is being erected to commemorate the 51st Anniversary of Indepen-dence, will be held on Saturday.
Harper highlighted that advisories will be published to alert citizens of the detours which they will have to take, as the works will continue throughout the day.
Last year, for the Golden Jubilee Anniversary, Banks DIH had funded the fabrication and installation of the arch at Agricola, the southern boundary of the capital city. The arch was a replacement for the one at Ruimveldt which went missing, after being removed to allow for expanded road works in 2004.
