A Number Two Village, East Canje, woman is presently nursing injuries to her throat after she was choked by a lone armed perpetrator, who invaded her home on Tuesday morning and robbed her of cash and jewellery.
The man has since been taken into custody.
According to Sabita Kellowan, also known as “Lalita”, 58, she resides at Lot 126 Lord Street, Number Two Village, East Canje, with her mother. She explained that around 8 am on Tuesday morning, she was making breakfast for her mother, when she saw a nearby resident rushing into her yard with a cutlass in his hand. “He get the cutlass and he vice me, and he say give me all you money and you gold, or me go kill you”, she relayed.
She said that she agreed to his demands, but the perpetrator continued to choke her, as he threw her onto a bed in the kitchen, and choked her even more.
Kellowan said that she told the man the money was upstairs. “Me go upstairs in the wardrobe and give he the money in one envelope, and come outside in the hall, in the cabinet get one gold purse, me give he all them jewellery in deh”, she continued.
The perpetrator made good his escape with US$90, Cayman $10, one gold bangle worth $100,000, one gold chain worth $60,000 and one hand chain costing $30,000, along with a cellular phone.
Kellowan stressed that while she was aware of the man’s numerous brushes with the law, never did she expect him to launch an attack on her, a nearby resident for many years now.
The woman added that she is now scared to continue living in her house.
Meanwhile, a police source told Stabroek News that the suspect had boarded a hire car heading to the Corentyne, after committing the crime. However, at the time, police ranks were on the road at the Berbice Bridge entrance at Palmyra Village. Upon noticing the police, the suspect exited the car and ran towards the swamp area at the bridge entrance, which led to a police officer chasing after him into the swamp and arresting him.
He is currently in police custody, pending charges.
