Berbice unit Monedderlust FC and Topp XX are the two teams which will be relegated from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League at the end of second season. The former now joins the Linden unit, following their loss to Buxton United by a 4-0 margin in their penultimate fixture.
It was a must win affair for the team from the Ancient County at the Tucville Community ground on Wednesday. However, despite battling to a 0-0 score at the end of the first half, Monedderlust cracked under the relentless attacking pressure of their foe, surrendering four goals in the process.
Experienced midfielder Denver Dennis opened the scoring, compliments of a 56th minute conversion, before Dillon Wright increased their advantage, when he found the back of the net seven minutes onward.
Paul Kingston then got into the scoring act, etching his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 78th minute. The second half blitz was then completed six minutes later, with William Europe’s strike. Due to the win, Buxton United climb into the third position with 12 points.
On the other hand, Monedderlust FC remains in the cellar position on three points. Meanwhile the top two positions in the tournament have been identified, with undefeated league leaders Guyana Defence Force (GDF) securing the championship, following their lopsided 4-1 win over Topp XX in the previous matchup held at the same venue on Friday May 5th.
With a game in hand, the army unit have captured the title, romping to a perfect 27 points, following nine consecutive games.
They will pocket the first place package of $6,000,000 and the championship trophy.
Fruta Conquerors have secured the runners-up position, after defeating Buxton United 2-0 in their previous meeting. The Tucville-based outfit climbed to 22 points to earn the runners-up bundle of $3,000,000 and trophy.
The focus will now be the battle for the third and fourth place packages of $2,000,000 and $1,000,000 respectively. The event will resume on Sunday at the Camp Ayanganna ground with the final three matches. At 16:00hrs, Victoria Kings will engage Monedderlust.
The second encounter at 18:00hrs will pit Buxton United against Topp XX. In the final fixture at 20:30hrs, GDF will oppose Fruta Conquerors in a top of the table clash.
