Fourteen-year-old Makeda Harding’s three-win performance was the highlight of the third evening of the annual Woodpecker Products junior national squash championships at the Georgetown Club squash court.
Harding, the 2016 Junior Caribbean bronze medallist, overcame a scampering Abosaide Cadogan in straight sets 11-4, 11-4, 11-6 to underscore her undisputed dominance in the girls under-15 category.
Harding, who played three matches last evening, also disposed of Jahcinta Adams and Saraha Lewis in similar fashion.
The 13-year-old Cadogan, who scurries around the court, also had success after defeating Kirsten Gomes in a competitive matchup. Cadogan, the 2016 girls U13 Caribbean bronze medallist, put on a fine display of serves and cheeky drop shots to defeat the powerful Gomes in straight sets. She took the first set 11- 4 but the second set, however, was more of a scrap as both girls ran well while engineering several strong shots and serves to entertain the small gathering. Cadogan, though, persevered to win that set 13 – 11 and the final set 11 – 8.
The other enthralling match of the evening saw Shomari Wilshire defeating Alexander Cheeks in the boy’s U17 and 19 encounter which was played simultaneously.
Cheeks took the first set which was tied at 9, 10 and 11, 13-11 as the two top junior boys battled it out.
Cheeks came out strong in the second to lead 6-3 but Wilshire, however, fought back to tie the score at 9 all before eventually taking the second set 11-9 and the third and fourth by 11-3 margins.
Lousi Da Silva, Shiloh Asvegado, Mohryan Baksh, and Beau Fernandes earned wins in the U-11 category while Michael Alphonso and James Mekdeci toppled their under-13 opponents. Maya Collins defeated Madison Fernandes in the girls U17 match with Fernandes returned minutes later to defeat Aliyah Persaud 3-1 after dropping the first set while Daniel Islam defeated his twin brother Anthony, three sets to one in the boys U17 category with those being the scores up to press time.
On Thursday, defending U19 champion Taylor Fernandes, Shomari Wiltshire and Kirsten Gomes were among the winners.
Fernandes brushed aside Harding 12 – 10, 11 – 3 and 11 – 7 while Wiltshire humbled Dominic Collins 11 – 1, 11 – 1, 11 – 2.
Gomes edged Madison Fernandes in the U15 division 11- 9, 9-11, 11 – 8 and 11 – 8 while Cadogan battled past Maya Collins 11 – 7, 13 – 11, 11 – 4 in the lone girls U17 fixture.
Gianni Carpenter dismissed Jason Gomes 11 – 9, 11 – 3, 11 – 1 and Lucas Jonas made light work of Osmond Mack 11 – 1, 11 – 3, 11 – 2 in the boys U15 category.
In the girls U15 section, Aliyah Persaud dismantled Teija Edwards 11 – 1, 11 – 1, 11 – 2 and Cadogan dismissed Jahcinta Adams 11 – 1, 11 – 1, 11 – 2.
In the boys U11 category, Nathan Rahaman defeated Dhiren Persaud 11 – 6, 11 – 2, 11- 3, Shiloh Asregado edged Chad De Abreu 10 – 12, 13 – 11, 14 – 12, 11 – 8 and Mohyryan Baksh downed Louis Da Silva 11 – 6, 11 – 2, 11 – 5.
In the boys U13 division, Ethan Jonas crushed Nicholas Verwey 11 – 7, 11 – 2, 11 – 8, Michael Alphonso mauled Liam Carpenter 11 – 0, 11 – 2, 11 – 0 and James Mekdeci brushed aside Nicholas Verwey 11 – 4, 11 – 2, 11 – 6.
The event resumes today at the same venue from 18:00hrs.
