Vice – president of the Guyana Squash Association, David Fernandes, says that he is pleased with the rate at which the junior players are progressing.
He also said that he was enthusiastic to see how they will fare at the upcoming Junior Caribbean Championships.
“I’m extremely satisfied. The level of squash we’ve seen this year is an improvement from past years. Even the kids in the under 11s and 13s actually had great rallies rather than a one stroke point and it really has to do with the level of commitment put in by the entire coaching staff and coach Ince [Carl] and everyone else that supports him, it’s unbelievable the level of squash we’ve seen this year,” Fernandes said.
Fernandes was at the time was speaking at the conclusion of the Woodpecker Products junior national championships which concluded at the Georgetown Club Squash Courts Sunday.
He weighed in on how he felt Guyana will perform at the upcoming Junior Caribbean Championships by candidly hinting at a possible 13th consecutive championship this year.
“We have no doubt that this tournament will help the team when we host the junior tournament in July. Their parents put in their bit and the kids actually put in a tremendous amount of individual effort because to be able to play this game competently, you just don’t have to do racket work, you have to be fit and the kids this year are one of the fitter bunches we have ever had and no matter what they will represent Guyana adequately.”
Fernandes expressed confidence in the likes of Shomari Wiltshire, Taylor Fernandes, Makeda Harding, Kirsten Gomes, Beau Fernandes, and Abosaide Cadogan, suggesting that they should easily make the finals of their individual age group categories and even go on to strike gold.
