Up and coming pugilists, Shaquille Wright (junior) and Trinidadian Nickel Joseph (youth) punched their way to the best boxers awards on Sunday night when the curtains came down on the second edition of the Caribbean’s Schoolboys and Juniors tournament at the National Gymnasium.
After clinching TKO victories against local boxer, Akeel Mounter and Jamaica’s Jerome Ennis, the exciting 75kg prospect from the Twin-Island Republic gained the judges’ nod for the coveted youth award.
The crowd pleasing Wright put on a dazzling display of attack and defence and counter punching in the 57kg fight against Joseph’s countryman, Blessing Waldropt to earn the prized junior trophy.
After a close first round, Wright asserted himself and imposed his will on Waldropt and won via TKO in the second stanza.
The silver went to Waldropt, while Jamaica’s Malachi Baker snared the bronze medals.
Guyana’s Ryan Albert (60kg) and Brian Harris (75kg) were also in the winners’ row on Sunday.
Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle stated that the incident free, three-day competition was successful and that the GBA and the other participating nations, St. Lucia, Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica look forward to the staging of third edition next year “perhaps in the summer”.
Ninvalle also encouraged corporate Guyana to get onboard with the development of the nursery stating that “we would like to see much more injection of resources.”
He added “You cannot go to an estate and do not put cane into it but want to extract sugar.”
The GBA head also heaped praises on local conglomerates, Banks DIH Limited, DDL along with Trustees Pawn Shop for their continued support of the association and its ventures.
