A 27-year-old seaman was yesterday morning discovered dead in Roxanne Burnham Gardens with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
Roy Roland known as `Gangster Roy’ of Lot 25 Castello Housing Scheme, La Penitence, Georgetown was discovered dead around 6:30 am yesterday on the eastern parapet of Marigold Street.
His shot body is believed to have been dumped from a vehicle and the police are currently pursuing a few of his associates including a close friend.
The back of his head bore a single gunshot wound. At the time of the discovery which was made by a passer-by, Roland was lying face down with a shirt covering his face.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News that investigators have since retrieved and reviewed CCTV footage and are actively pursuing a close friend of Roland and few of his associates.
Blanhum said the police were up to last evening trying to determine if Roland had any brushes with the law. A 9mm spent shell was found at the scene.
At the dead man’s home yesterday, his relatives were trying to come to grips with his death.
While the circumstances surrounding his death remains unknown, the dead man’s cousin, Yolanda Mars, explained that she last saw him alive on Tuesday evening.
“He come over next door by we, all dress up and he did checking out he self and shortly after he left and went out”, she said.
The woman said that when she next saw Roland he was waiting on his friend, who is a taxi driver and who usually transports him whenever he goes out. “He child mother went by he same time, so he and she left in the taxi and all we hearing now is that he drop off at some shop and the taxi take she home”, the woman explained.
She said they last heard from him later the said evening when he called to inform his wife that he was going to “make a spin” and he would be home later.
According to Yolanda the family learnt of Roland’s death after someone visited their home early yesterday morning informing them of the discovery. “The person like they see the body and they know he, so he take out pictures and bring it and show we”, she said.
As a result, the dead man’s father and several other relatives travelled to the scene where they positively identified him.
Persons in the area recalled hearing what they believed to be the sound of a gunshot shortly after midnight yesterday. Relatives said that based on what they were told Roland was shot and dumped from a vehicle.
They said that he never had any police problems. “He never had any police problem, just normal thing like not riding the bike with a helmet and so but he never went to court or get lock-up”, Yolanda said.
Roland was a well-known individual to many. He leaves to mourn two children; ages five and two. His wife is seven months pregnant.
His body is presently at the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination.
