The Guyana Darts Association (GDA) is set to host an international darts contest from 26th to 28th May, 2017, in a bold effort to popularize the sport, while also aiming to put on a good show in an effort to bid for the 2020 Caribbean Darts Championship.
The contest which is titled “The Guyana Independence International Darts tournament,” will feature players from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados, and Brazil who will be vying for over US$3,000 in cash and prizes.
The launch took place at the Millenium Manor Hotel, 43 Hadfield Street, Georgetown. Sponsorship, according to President Sheir Yaseen was hard to come by, as he implored corporate Guyana and the government to lend their support in an effort expose the niche sport.
The contest will comprise of four categories, men’s and women’s singles, mixed nations and the luck of the draw category. An entrance fee of $15US will be charged for each category.
The competition will begin at 18:00hrs at the Millenium Manor Hotel on the 26th, and 27th, with the final day’s competition commencing from 12:00hrs.
Guyana’s 40 strong team will be spearheaded by the current Caribbean single and doubles darts champion Sudesh Fitzgerald, as the hosts seek to defend the home turf.
R. Ganesh Mining Enterprise, Rosters Coconut Water, and Millenium Manor Hotel are the sponsors of the event.
