Dear Editor,
The suggestion by a letter writer to your column recently about regional awards ceremonies is worthy of serious consideration. The writer listed many individuals of the region referenced, who are worthy of being recognized. No doubt, there are countless numbers of persons who contribute in many ways to the development of their communities and by extension their region.
Persons who live simple, quiet lives but in their own way bring upliftment, fulfilment, enhancement and enrichment; who strive for betterment and might never be a national awardee, but nevertheless are deserving of being recognized and honoured.
Regional administrations should see the merit and value in such a suggestion and explore taking it on board. Of course the politicizing of the process should be avoided.
Who knows, it just might bring about the national and social cohesion we are striving for.
Yours faithfully,
Shamshun Mohamed
