Fruta Conquerors Football Club (FCFC) has tabled a motion to be presented at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Congress on Saturday mandating that an investigation be launched into the infamous switched Mexico FIFA World Cup 2014 Qualifier.
According to the document which was seen by Stabroek Sports, stated: “Be It Resolved-That this May 27th GFF Congress mandate the executive of the GFF to commission an investigation within 14 days of this Congress’s consent into the fiasco of the Mexico-Guyana game in the USA and have a report of the findings presented to the next Ordinary Congress.
“Be it Further Resolved-That this investigation address whether any oral or written contract was entered into with players and staff for that game and if the then GFF was a party to the same,” the document added.
It was also requested that the investigation seek to uncover the beneficiaries of the decision to move the game.
“Be It Further Resolved-That this investigation also addresses whether there were direct beneficiaries from the moving of the game, be it individually? (members) or as a Federation, while examining what was the total financial gains received by the GFF for the game moving to the USA,” stated the document.
The GFF, then under the administration of Acting President Franklin Wilson and General Secretary Noel Adonis, switched the encounter originally scheduled for the Providence National Stadium to Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium in October 2012. The GFF later revealed that switching of the fixture allegedly earned their coffers a meagre US$75,500.
However, according to sources close to federation during that period, the decision to host the fixture in the USA netted the federation a significantly larger financial package than what was disclosed to the public.
According to Fruta Conquerors, the aim of the motion which is supported by Buxton United, is to finally shed light on the issue which has never been properly investigated despite the public interest.
“FCFC is a partner for football development in Guyana and as such wants to see the game grow. The motion standing in FCFC name is our effort to give closure to one bad chapter of football in Guyana since they are still too many unanswered questions on this subject. The objective is to have the principals candidly give an account of what transpired in 2012 so that the Congress and Players that were involved can have a formal insight into those events and thus put the issue to rest,” the document stated.
