Dear Editor,
Today, Guyana celebrates 51 years as an independent nation, As we celebrate nationhood it is opportune for us to reflect on where we are and where we came from; there is an old saying that he who forgets the past is condemned to repeat it.
I recall that when the first time our flag was hoisted many of us were inspired; it brought us to tears and we were filled with immense pride and joy. It has made us feel at home in foreign places; it has given us a sense of identity and belonging.
Independence speaks to certain significant developments in our history; it is symbolic of a united struggle against colonial rule. It is emblematic of struggles, sacrifices and hard work in a pluralistic society like ours.
Liberty entrusts us as leaders at every level with the responsibility of good governance, accountability, inclusiveness, transparency and social cohesion.
The struggles of our forefathers is a continuous reminder of the need to work together to advance the interest of this nation. The vision of our founding fathers is reflected in our motto and many national songs, as these national symbols remind us to champion the cause for national unity.
Independence, therefore, is an occasion which should be celebrated with reverence but at the same time we should be contemplating on ways to advance this nation. Autonomy confers on the citizenry the right to choose their own representatives and confers on a nation the right to chart its own course in pursuit of its destiny. But we must remember that it was the act of unity that caused us to triumph in the first place, and it is unity that will help to advance the interest of this, our beloved nation.
I am convinced as Mayor of this great city that unity is the key that would unlock the potential in every sector, and chart a new course to bring this nation into great divine favour. A nation divided against itself cannot stand, and a city divided against itself cannot not progress.
Therefore, I must make a clarion call for unity, love, hard work, dedication and respect for each other. With these we can chart a new course for this nation and leave a legacy of national unity for the generations to come.
I therefore take this opportunity on behalf of the City of Georgetown to wish all Guyanese a Happy 51st Independence Anniversary.
May the great architect of the universe bless Guyana as we move forward.
Yours faithfully,
Patricia Chase-Green
Mayor of Georgetown
