A Texila American University medical student yesterday afternoon spearheaded the delivery of a baby mid-air aboard a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) aircraft, which was transporting the mother to the city for emergency care.
The GDF, in a statement on its Facebook page, said that both baby and mother have since been transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The statement said the aircraft was at exactly 5:48 p.m transformed into a delivery room as a baby girl anxiously made her entrance into the world in mid-air during a scheduled flight out of Fairview, an Amerindian Village in the North Rupununi.
Fortunately, the medical student was on board, and spearheaded the delivery, the statement said. The mother had developed complications as the child was in a breech position and a request had been made for her to be air dashed to the city.
GDF pilots Majors Mohinder Ramjag and Patrick Nicols, the statement said, were elated by the experience and were also happy that both mother and child are safe.
