A mechanical glitch on a Fly Jamaica plane was the reason for a recent delay in flights, affecting passengers en-route to Guyana from Toronto, Canada and New York, United States.
A source at the airline told Stabroek News that they were unable to complete repairs to the aircraft in time, resulting in the delay.
According to the airline’s website, flights have since resumed as scheduled.
It was stated that on May 27 flight OJ257 from Toronto to Guyana was cancelled while flights OJ262 from Georgetown to Kingston, Jamaica and OJ270 from Kingston to New York were rescheduled to May 28.
The airline source explained to this newspaper that while passengers were affected by the delay as a result of the cancelled and rescheduled flights, the company chartered planes to move passengers. Stabroek News was told that three flights were chartered to move passengers between Georgetown, Toronto and New York.
A passenger, Taajnauth Jadunauth, who was travelling from Toronto to Guyana in a letter to this newspaper said that his flight OJ257 was cancelled.
The upset passenger went on to say that he made numerous attempts to contact the airline, but all efforts were in vain.
Jadunath said he went twice to the Pearson Airport and was unable to receive any assistance from personnel of the airline. He also stated that he was not contacted by the airline staff about alternative travel information and as such, he would be taking legal action against the airline.
Many other passengers vented their frustration on the airline’s Facebook page and called for a better delivery of service.
