TUNBRIDGE WELLS, England, CMC – Barbadian Jofra Archer struck a cameo as part of a brave rearguard effort but his efforts failed to prevent Sussex from crashing to a 147-run defeat at the hands of Kent in the English County Championship here yesterday.
Resuming the final day of the Division Two encounter on 182 for six with their target of 502 all but an impossibility, Sussex fought bravely before succumbing for 356 in their second innings at Nevill Ground.
South African seamer Vernon Philander struck a breezy unbeaten 73 off 93 balls with 12 fours and a six batting at number nine while the right-handed Archer slammed 27 from 30 deliveries, with two fours and two sixes, batting at number 10.
The pair put on 49 for the ninth wicket before the 22-year-old Archer perished, lbw to pacer James Harris who claimed four for 103.
Wicketkeeper Michael Burgess, unbeaten overnight on 44, made 68.
Fast bowler Archer, who has been outstanding this season, struggled in the game and finished with a single wicket from 34 overs.
