Two Chinese nationals were yesterday fined and ordered deported after they admitted to spending almost a year more than the time granted to them to stay in Guyana.
Zenyong Laing and Zebin Laing were handed the sentences by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown. The charge against each man stated that between June 20, 2016, and May 30, 2017, he failed to comply with conditions, having been permitted to stay in Guyana from March 19 to June 20, 2016.
Zenyong, 32 and Zebin, each pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read and translated by a translator.
Police prosecutor Arvin Moore presented similar facts for each man. He stated that they arrived in Guyana through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri using their Republic of China passports on June 20, 2016, around 03:13 hrs.
The men were later each granted a three-month stay. However, on May 30, police
carried out a raid on a logging worksite at South Amelia’s Ward, where they found the two men, who had overstayed the time granted to them. Investi-gations later revealed that neither of the men applied for or was granted an extension of stay.
Subsequent to the facts being read, both men apologised for overstaying their time. They were each later fined $30,000 or a default sentence of four weeks in jail. They will also be escorted to the nearest port of exit immediately after paying their fine or serving the default sentence.
