The East Coast Highway Expansion Project is expected to start soon and the contractor, China Railway First Group Company Ltd, has advertised for labour for the project.
In an ad which was recently placed, the company said it was hiring loader operators, excavator operators, bulldozer operators, roller/compactor operators, dump truck drivers, concrete truck drivers, oil/water truck drivers, mechanics and labourers.
The ad also explained that persons residing on the East Coast would be given preference.
When Stabroek News made an inquiry, it was related by an official that the project is expected to start soon. However, the official, who did not want to be named, was unable to give a specific start date.
The government signed a framework agreement with the People’s Republic of China for US$45.5 million concessional loan in November. The contract was awarded to China Railway First Group Company Limited, which is expected to complete works in 18 months after it starts. The US$45,561,000 (314,000,000 yuan/$9,440,366,003) loan is expected to be repaid in 20 years, after a five-year grace period.
