Two Cubans were yesterday each fined $60,000 and ordered deported after admitting to overstaying in the country.
Yanis Barban, 29, and William Cascarro, 45, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer to separate charges, which were translated for them.
Both admitted to the charge that they overstayed after being permitted to stay in Guyana from October 5, 2016 to April 9, 2017.
According to Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves, Barban and Cascarro came to Guyana through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on October 5, 2016, and were granted permission to stay for six months.
However, it was only discovered that they had overstayed when they were stopped by police while travelling by car to Lethem on June 1, 2017. A check of their passports revealed that neither man had been granted an extension.
Subsequently, they were fined $60,000 each with an alternative of a sentence of six months in jail if unable to pay the fine. It was also stated that immediately after the payment of the fine or serving of the sentence, they are to be immediately deported to Cuba.
