Guyana Defence Force librarian Jewel Gibson, who was shot during what appeared to be the attempted hijacking of her car one week ago, remains hospitalised and the suspects are still on the run.
Commander of ‘C’ Division Calvin Brutus, when contacted for a comment yesterday, said the investigation was ongoing and the police were yet to interview Gibson.
The 44-year-old woman was shot once to her stomach last Sunday during the incident which occurred at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara. She was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she remains.
While the motive of the attack is unknown, Stabroek News had previously reported that Gibson had just arrived home and parked her motor vehicle, PVV 4621, when two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, pounced on her.
Information had revealed that she was about to exit the vehicle, when the suspect who was armed with the gun approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and held her at gunpoint. The other bandit was on the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
The gunman reportedly discharged a round in Gibson’s direction which struck her to the stomach before he removed the key from the ignition.
The men then made good their escape on foot.
A tenant had recalled hearing the sound of a gunshot. She said before she could have enquired further, the wounded Gibson was at the door calling for help. The tenant, with the assistance of neighbours, reportedly transported Gibson to the hospital.
