The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has confirmed Guyana’s participation at the upcoming senior Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Championships set for Havana, Cuba from July 18 – 23.
President of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe made the revelation, debunking any shadows over Guyana’s participation at the 2017 racquet-wielding contest.
“Guyana will be sending a representative team. We’ve actually had an engagement with some of the senior players, outlining the programme, aspects of training among other things. The meeting was quite fruitful,” Munroe told Stabroek Sport.
The president, however, highlighted the financial constraints the association will face in order to field a team since the games were shifted from Trinidad and Tobago to Cuba.
However, that hindrance, according to Munroe, will not prevent the association from exposing their talents to the communist Caribbean island.
“One of the big things is that the cost is quite high but the association is committed to sending a team,” he noted.
Guyana should fare well at the senior Caribbean games since they are fresh off their recent international assignment at the Baku, Azerbaijan Islamic Solidarity Games where national coach ldi Lewis expressed his satisfaction at Guyana’s showing.
Both the male and female table tennis teams were knocked out in the quarter-final round of the tournament which featured some of the best players in the world.
The likes of Natalie Cummings, who had a good showing at the Baku games, should easily make the trip the Cuba while Shemar Britton, who missed the Asian trip due to exams, should strengthen Guyana’s medal prospects in Havana.
National men’s singles champion Christopher Franklin, however, is likely to miss the trip.
