Smartphones have become one of the most important technological devices in modern times. In fact the use of smartphones surpasses that of a personal computer. Smartphones are been utilized for commerce, health, news, social media, communications, education, banking, emergency responses, entertainment, photography and in many other areas of our daily lives. Developing countries are hastening to roll out telecommunications infrastructure to enable its population to connect to the internet via smart devices.
The recent statement by the Commissioner General of GRA suggesting a ban on smartphones on GRA premises is inconsiderate and backward thinking. Firstly, the GRA is not known for its efficiency and a fast turnaround time. Transactions can be lengthy and in some cases more than one visit is required. GRA also uses a number system where customers have to sit and wait under an outdoor tent, rain or shine, until their number is called. It will be unfair for the public to waste valuable time sitting under a tent doing nothing when they can utilize their phones during that time. Secondly, the Commis-sioner should focus on creating an organisation that is customer friendly, efficient, and incorruptible.
