Former national road race champion, Walter Grant-Stuart warmed up nicely for this weekend’s National Cycling Championships with a win on Sunday in the 50-mile Albert Rose Memorial road race.
Despite being differently abled, Grant-Stuart dominated the event and soloed across the line for the race which ended on the Bamia Hill on the Linden Soesdyke Highway in two hours, 22 minutes and 13 seconds.
Besides the winner’s trophy, Grant-Stuart nicknamed ‘One Hand’ also pocketed six of the 10 sprint prizes worth $2000 each.
Andre ‘Padlock’ Green and Paul De Nobrega joined Grant-Stuart on the podium while Curtis Dey, Jamal John and Mario King rounded out the top six rewarding positions.
Dey was the first junior to cross the line ahead of Christopher Cornelius and Brighton John.
Lindener, Hazina Barret was the first female finisher with Abigail Jeffrey second.
Warren ‘40’ Mc Kay was the winner of the U-45 veteran category with Junior Niles and Everal Mundy placing second and third in that order. The Over-45 division was won by Ian Jackson followed by Andy Spencer and Oliver Young.
The National Cycling Championships, the flag ship calendar event of the Guyana Cycling Federation will pedal on Saturday with the Time Trials followed by the road race a day later. More information about the two-day championships will be published in a subsequent article.
