West Demerara Secondary laboured to a 3-0 win over L’Aventure yesterday, when the 7th Annual Digicel Schools Football Championship, continued at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
Guilty of spurning several chances in a scoreless first half in the 70 minute contest, West Demerara sealed their place in the next round via goals from Exam David, Glenroy Duncan and Kemar Ferreira in the 45th, 48th and 60th minute, respectively.
David opened the scoring with a penalty kick conversion into the lower right corner following a handball infringement.
Duncan made it 2-0 three minutes later, racing into the left side of the box, before unleashing a powerful finish into the lower right corner.
Ferreira then put the game to bed, slotting home unchallenged into the left corner, after collecting a pass inside the right side of the box.
The event continues on tomorrow at the same venue with a tripleheader. At 11:00hrs, Vreed-en-Hoop battles Patentia Secondary, while Stewartville opposes Uitvlugt at 13:00hrs.
In the final fixture at 15:00hrs, Goed Fortuin tackles Leonora Secondary. The championship which is scheduled to conclude on July 31st, features more than 120 schools from each of the 10 administrative regions, competing in an elimination format.
Chase Academy is the defending champion, with Christianburg/Wismar as the most successful school with four consecutive titles – 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015- and appearances in six successive finals.
The other winner of the tourney was Government Technical Institute in the inaugural edition in 2011.
Winner of the event will receive $1,000,000 towards a school project and a trophy.
