Add another National Road Race Title to Claire Fraser-Green’s collection.
One day after winning her sixth national time-trial championship in the hills of Linden, the UK based rider took her talents to the open roads and once again soloed to victory in the annual flagship event of the Guyana Cycling Federation’s calendar.
In the 53-mile race from Homestretch Avenue to Timehri’s bottleneck and back, Fraser-Green stopped the clock in two hours, 28 minutes and 49 seconds, miles ahead of her other competitor, Shenicka Teixeira.
Her fifth national road race title in as many years came as easy as a Sunday morning.
In the male side of things, Warren ’40’ McKay had the perfect Father’s Day gift when he crossed the line in pole to take the spoils of the veteran category ahead of Time-Trial winner, Leer Nunes and a game Steve Ramsuchit.
For the grueling 70-mile trek from Homestretch Avenue to Camp Wesleyan on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway and back, the father of 10 recorded a winning time of two hours, 58 minutes and 40 seconds as did junior champion, Brighton John.
John bested Nigel Duguid and Marcus Keiler to be crowned the junior national road race champion after favorite Curtis Dey suffered mechanical problems and had to settle for fourth.
David Hicks (2hr: 29m.48s), Jonathan Ramsuchit and Ralph Seenarine were the first three juvenile finishers in that order.
The juveniles journeyed the same route as the females.
Come Sunday, the senior riders will take centre stage in a historic and grueling 103-mile race from Homestretch Avenue to Camp Soweyo and back. Geron Williams, the 2014 and 2016 National Road Race champion, is currently plying his trade on the US circuit but he is expected to defend his title on race day.
Williams is expected to be challenged by standout cyclists: Shaquel Agard, Paul DeNobrega, Andrew Hicks, Raynauth Jeffrey, Hamza Eastman, Jamal John, Romello Crawford and Alonzo Ambrose.
