Human Trafficking Task Force, women miners seek to improve collaboration

Minister of Public Security and Chairman of the Ministerial Task force on Trafficking in Persons, Khemraj Ramjattan met with Executive members of the Guyana Women Miners Organization (GWMO) on Monday to discuss how collaboration between the task force and GWMO could be improved.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), among the topics discussed were the GWMO’s role in fighting trafficking in persons in Guyana, especially regarding its role with government agencies; the need for better sharing of information during ongoing cases; the Guyana Police Force’s response to reports of suspected trafficking; and the issue of drugs in schools, during which the minister shared information on the newly commissioned National Anti-Narcotics Agency (NaNa).

Ramjattan expressed his gratitude to the GWMO for their work on behalf of trafficking in persons’ victims and for other actions displayed over the years in its attempts to help combat the crime, the MPS bulletin said. The minister noted the interventions of the Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes, and encouraged the GWMO to increase its participation in activities conducted by the task force.

According to the media release, the GWMO team comprised of its President Urica Primus, Vice President Donna Charles, Head of the Trafficking in Persons Unit, Marina Charles and Donna Scott, committee member and area representative.
