A pupil of F.E Pollard Primary School was pulled out of a trench, some distance away from his home, on Tuesday afternoon after he had been missing for a day.
According to police, the deceased, Isaiah Smartt, 8, of Lot 148, Block E Sophia, Georgetown was found by a cousin, floating under a rain coat, on Tuesday.
Stabroek News was told that the lad went missing on Monday afternoon, and several searches for him proved futile.
A cousin, Shane De Mattos was walking in the yard when he saw Smartt’s blue rain coat in the drain and enquired. The police said that he took a stick and raised the coat, discovering the lifeless body of Smartt in the trench, which was filled with about three feet of water.
Just before Smartt went missing on Monday, he was in the company of his sister Rashida Stoll at her residence. Smartt was playing in Stoll’s room under her guidance but she fell asleep, and it is believed he left the room sometime after. She told police that after she was awoken on Monday afternoon and did not see the lad, she made enquiries but they were unable to locate him.
The body is at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
