Twenty-two-year old Julius Tejwah, yesterday walked out of the court a free man, after a jury acquitted him of raping a 13-year-old girl back in 2015.
The 12-member mixed jury unanimously found the man not guilty of the charge which stated that on July 31, 2015, at Seosdyke, East Bank Demerara, he sexually penetrated a child under the age of 16.
The jury returned its verdict after about two hours of deliberations.
The former accused had always maintained his innocence.
After the verdict was announced, Justice Navindra Singh, who presided over the case, discharged a visibly relieved Tejwah, informing him that he was free to go.
Tejwah was represented by defence attorney Maxwell Mc Kay.
The state’s case, meanwhile, was presented by Prosecutor Tamieka Clarke, who called six witnesses to the stand.
The trial proceedings into the case were held in camera at the High Court in Georgetown.
