The police have held a driver who they say is responsible for the death of a carpenter, who was lying on a Herstelling, East Bank Demerara cross street when he was run over by a car on Saturday afternoon.
Kalicharran Goordial, 49, of Creekdam, Herstelling is the man who died in the accident.
According to the police statement, their Investigation revealed that Goordial was said to be highly intoxicated and was lying on the centre of a cross street adjoining Second Street, when the car which was proceeding east along Second Street, suddenly veered north into the cross street and hit Goordial.
Goordial was subsequently rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctors. The statement added that, Goordial’s body is presently at the Lyken’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The driver who fled the scene was later found and arrested and is assisting with the investigation. A breathalyser test was conducted and no trace of alcohol was found.
According to the family of the deceased, they are unaware of what transpired at the scene of the accident. They said that they got news an hour after the accident had occurred and are still in shock.
