River View wins Guinness `Greatest of the Streets’ Bartica zone

River View won the inaugural Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Bartica Zone tournament after they edged Police 1-0 on penalty kicks in the final Sunday at the Bartica Community Centre Tarmac.

It was a contest befitting of a final as, watched by a massive crowd, the game ended 2-2 after normal and extra time sending the fixture into penalty shootout-out to decide the outcome.

Victorious River View captain Anzel Edwards collects the championship trophy in the presence of team-mates and representatives of Banks DIH Limited after defeating Police to claim the inaugural Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Bartica Zone title.

Asked to shoot first from the distance Police got off to the worst possible start as the dependable Mark Boyce missed from the mark much to the approval of the partisan crowd.

However, the mammoth crowd was given a reason to be disappointed as River View failed to take advantage of the lawmen’s failure, missing from the distance in their first attempt.

The struggles for Police continued in the second round as they missed once again while River View made no mistake from the distance this time netting down the centre to send the crowd in a frenzy.

Needing to score in the third round to keep the contest alive, Police sealed their own defeat in the showdown, blasting their final effort wide of the target.

River View took home $350,000 and a trophy and they also earned the right to represent the zone at the National Championships commencing July 8th.

Police received $150,000 and a trophy.

Earlier, Gavin Gentle had handed the lawmen took the lead in the fourth minute, slotting home into the empty net, after a deflected pass fell into his path.

The lawmen then increased their lead in the 13th minute through a powerful strike from Mark Boyce from the centre of the field.

River View reduced the deficit one minute later through Stephen Edwards who blasted the ball into the centre of the net to commence the comeback which was completed by Anzel Edwards in the 26th minute with a first time shot from the right side into the left of the box after receiving a pass from the left side.

In the third place playoff, Campbellville downed Potaro Strikers 2-0 on penalty kicks after the game ended scoreless at the end of regulation time.

Campbellville won $100,000 and a trophy while Potaro Strikers pocketed $75,000 and a trophy.

In the semi-finals, Riverview edged Campbellville 3-2. Romario Lake bagged a brace in the 23rd and 28th minute while Andel Norton scored in the fourth minute.

For Campbellville, Marvin Jacobs netted a brace in the 17th and 19th minute.

In the second semi-final Police defeated Potaro Strikers 2-0 with Roderick Hamilton and Mark Boyce scored in the 24th and 26th minute apiece.
