A barbeque business on Mandela Avenue has become a nuisance to residents of Lodge and motorists, who are being affected by the smoke from its operations, according to city councillor Monica Thomas.
Thomas, of Constituency 9 (Lodge/ Meadowbrook), highlighted the situation during a statutory council meeting on Monday, when she called on the Mayor and City Council to intervene.
After listening to Thomas’ concerns, Mayor Patricia Chase-Green promised to intervene and ensure that some order is brought to operation of the business, Grill Kings.
Thomas told the council that despite the owner of the operation installing a chimney, it is too low and the smoke continues to affect residents.
“This is an environmental hazard affecting businesses as well.
We talk about preserving the environment, having this clean and green economy and we have an environmental issue that nobody is talking about,” she added.
Prior to the installation of the chimney, Thomas noted that residents complained that the smoke affected asthmatics.
“The problem has not been solved. It is a bad location for a business of this magnitude.
It is a traffic hazard as well,” the councilor, said while declaring that she is not trying to “take bread out of a man’s mouth” but the owner should consider operating in an enclosed environment.
Motorists have also complained of the traffic congestion when trying to get past the business.
