Emanuel Atherley, Eugene Baptiste and Ashley Arthur won their respective categories when the Bartica Table Tennis Steering Committee held its Primary and Secondary Schools novices tournament played June 24 at the Bartica Community Centre.
In the Secondary Schools singles final, Atherley defeated Tyrese Gomes 11-4, 11 -7 and 11 -5 while Baptiste of St Anthony’s Primary and Ashley Arthur of Two Miles Primary captured the boys and girls’ Primary Schools singles titles.
Baptiste defeated Rhys Belle 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 while Arthur got the better Kristie Rambharat in straight sets.
The trophies and medals presented to the winners were donated by the National Sports Commission and the Guyana Table Tennis Association.
The tournament attracted over 30 male and female players from St John-the-Baptiste Primary, St Anthony’s Primary, Two Miles Primary, Holy Name Primary, Agatash Primary and Bartica Secondary.
Administrative Officer of the NSC, Gervy C Harry delivered an address to the young racquet wielders. He also urged the parents to continue to support the young players as they strive for success in the sport and reiterated the need for sports expansion outside of Georgetown.
This he said can be done through schools and suggested more teachers be trained in the sport.
He also assisted with the presentation of prizes and congratulated the steering committee for a job well done.
