A miner was yesterday granted bail by the Chief Magistrate, after being accused of stealing 19 pennyweight of raw gold.
Thirty-seven-year-old Collin Sherwin Jerome denied the charged that he, on June 22, at Miniha Backdam, Potaro River, Essequibo, stole 19 pennyweight of raw gold, valued at $190,000, property of Anil Pantan.
According to facts read by Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore, on the day in question, the complainant had just burnt the gold and left it to take a shower. Pantan, later observed the defendant picking up the gold and running away. Jerome was later arrested after the matter was reported.
The court also heard that only 5.7 pennyweight of the raw gold was recovered.
There was no objection to bail being granted by the prosecutor, and as such, the defendant was granted $70,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
The matter will be called again on July 18, at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
