Jamaica couple convicted for murder of UWI lecturer

(Jamaica Gleaner) The former live-in helper for Dr Peter Vogel along with her boyfriend have been found guilty of the 2007 murder of the university lecturer.

Yanika Scott and Kelvin Downer, showed no emotion after the unanimous verdict was announced in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston a short time ago.

The jury of four men and three women deliberated for nearly two and a half hours.

Scott, 31, and Downer, 29, are to be sentenced on July 28. The body of the Swiss citizen who lectured at the University of the West Indies was found in the study room at his home in College Commons, St Andrew on July 19, 2007.

Police investigators testified that his hands were tied behind his back, his feet were bound at the ankle and there was a piece of cloth tied around his mouth.

Forensic pathologist Dr S N Prasad Kadiyala gave evidence that he was strangled.

According to prosecutors Maxine Jackson and Kelly-Ann Francis, Vogel’s death came four months after Scott was hired to care for Vogel’s family.
