LONDON, CMC – Fast bowler Ravi Rampaul grabbed two wickets but ended on the losing side as opener Alex Hales’s record-breaking hundred lifted Nottinghamshire to a four-wicket win in the Royal London One-Day Cup here yesterday.
Chasing a competitive 298 for victory at historic Lord’s, Notts raced to their target with 13 balls remaining with England opener Hales lashing an unbeaten 187 off 167 deliveries with 20 fours and four sixes – the highest-ever score in an English one-day final.
Rampaul, who claimed two for 52 from his 10 overs, had helped put Surrey in control when he removed Riki Wessels for six and Samit Patel for seven, as Notts tumbled to 150 for five in the 26th over.
He trapped Wessels lbw in the ninth over at 60 for two and then had Patel caught at backward square pulling at a short ball in the 15th.
However, Hales staged a 137-run, sixth wicket stand with former England wicketkeeper Chris Read (58) to revive the innings and put Notts within touching distance of victory.
Earlier, opener Mark Stoneman had carved out a wonderful unbeaten 144 to help push Surrey up to 297 for nine off their 50 overs.
He put on 83 for the first wicket with Jason Roy (23) and a further 58 for the second wicket with Sri Lankan star Kumar Sangakkara (30).
