Eaion Kwesi Kaman Le Black, who tried to board a plane to Barbados after swallowing 71 cocaine pellets, will be spending the next four years in jail.
Le Black, 35, of 101 Ogle Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara, was also fined $5,120,010, which is equivalent to three times the street value of the drug.
Georgetown Magistrate Leron Daly handed down the sentence after Le Black pleaded guilty to the charge that between July 3 and July 4, at Woodlands Hospital, he had 774 grammes (equivalent to 1.7 pounds) of cocaine for trafficking.
The prosecution stated that on July 3, the convict was an outgoing passenger at the Eugene F Correia Airport, on Liat Airline Flight 392, which was bound for Barbados. There, he was observed by a Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) officer to be sweating profusely and acting suspiciously.
Le Black was then questioned. He was subsequently taken to Woodlands Hospital, where an X-ray was done and revealed the pellets in his small intes-tines. He was then given medication to excrete the pellets, which he later did. He was discharged from the hospital on July 6, and taken to the CANU headquarters, where the drugs were weighed.
When asked by Magis-trate Daly if he had anything to say in relation to the offence, Le Black told the court that he was sorry about what happened. He was then sentenced and fined.
