Five Haitian youths were injured early yesterday morning after a hire car they were travelling in collided with a donkey along the Number 53 Village Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
Police identified the injured as Dia Doxine, 19, Dossier Farantazcia, 15, Dossier James, 15, Ony Jean Pierre, 15, and five-year-old Helas Naima.
Following the accident, which occurred around 5.15 am yesterday, they were all rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where Farantazcia was treated and then discharged.
While the others were transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital and admitted, Doxine was transferred to the George-town Public Hospital in an unconscious state.
The police, in a press release, said enquiries from the driver of the car, who is a member of the Guyana Fire Service and who resides in Number 53 Village, Corentyne, revealed that he was proceeding north along the western carriageway of the road when the donkey suddenly ran into his path. As a result, the driver said he veered, causing the vehicle to topple several times.
At the time of the accident, the driver indicated that he was en-route to Springlands with the Haitians, who had all arrived legally into the country on Thursday.
The 34-year-old driver, according to the police, has been taken into custody and is assisting with investigations. “He was given a breathalyzer test and no blood alcohol was detected,” the police added.
