Masters Academy dismissed Lodge Secondary by a 3-0 margin when 7th Annual Digicel Schools Football Championship continued yesterday at the Tucville Community ground.
An unfortunate own goal led to Masters Academy taking the lead in the 20th minute as an attempted clearance by the defender following a powerful strike was inadvertently deflected into the back of the net.
The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval. Upon the resumption, Tyrell Khan doubled his team’s lead through a 50th minute conversion.
Racing onto a through pass, the speedy Khan evaded the challenge of a defender while heading into the penalty box, before hammering his effort into the back of the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance.
The win was then sealed in the 64th when Khan secured his double. Sprinting away from the backline to latch onto a lobbed through pass, Khan, upon entering the penalty box, lobbed his effort over the advancing goalkeeper down the centre of the net.
Over at the St. Ignatius Sports Club, Lethem, defending Region #9 champion Annai Secondary, defeated Aishalton 8-0. At the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, Vergenoegen Secondary edged Leonora Secondary 3-2.
Meanwhile, North Georgetown overcame Tutorial High 6-4 at the Ministry of Education Ground, Carifesta Avenue.
The tournament resumes today at various venues. The championships, which conclude July 31st, will feature more than 120 schools from each of the 10 administrative regions, competing in an elimination format.
Chase Academy is the defending champion with Christianburg/Wismar the most successful school with four consecutive titles (2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015) in six successive final appearances.
The other winner of the tourney was Government Technical Institute (GTI) in the inaugural edition (2011). Victor of the event will receive $1,000,000 towards a school project and a trophy.
The second, third and fourth place finishers will collect $700,000, $400,000 and $350,000 towards a school initiative and the respective accolade.
