PhotosNew Salem koker doorBy Stabroek News July 11, 2017 The defective door at the Salem, East Bank Essequibo koker has finally been replaced. According to a Salem resident, the door was recently replaced by workers attached to the Regional Democratic Council. The door of the sluice collapsed almost a month ago as a result of spring tides, which subsequently saw flooding in the community. Residents told Stabroek News that the regional authorities had put some planks in place as a stopgap. Due to the flooding, residents were forced to move appliances and livestock to higher ground. One resident said that floodwaters rose to approximately 6 to 8 inches in height on the land. Some livestock farmers reported losses after they were unable to move their animals to higher ground in time. The resident opined that the situation could have been prevented if a report had been made to the Regional Democratic Council earlier about the defective door, but he said no report was made.Comments
