Santos hammered Pele FC 4-0 when the inaugural Corona Beer Invitational Football Championship commenced Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.
Robby McGloggan opened the scoring in the ninth minute, finishing into the lower left corner past the advancing goalkeeper from inside the centre of the box, after racing onto a through pass.
Kenroy Demonick doubled their lead two minutes later directing his towering header into the top left corner after latching onto a right side corner-kick inside the centre of the area.
Joshua Parvatan extended the advantage in the 65th minute, evading several challenges while entering the left of the box during a solo run, before hammering a right foot thunderbolt into the top right corner.
The result was then sealed in the 90th+1 minute as Orin Yarde scored via a right foot strike which rolled under the body of the goalkeeper and into the lower left corner.
Meanwhile, Northern Rangers downed Eastveldt 2-0. Own goal in the 22nd minute opened the scoring, while Sunil Logan scored in the 64th minute. Also, Riddim Squad and Flamingo battled to a 0-0 result.
The tourney continues today at the same venue with three matches. At 17:00hrs, Western Tigers will battle Black Pearl, while GFC engage Camptown from 19:00hrs.
The final fixture will witness GPF taking aim at Beacons FC from 21:00hrs. The event, which will be played in an initial group format, features 12 teams under the umbrella of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA).
Group-A consists of Northern Rangers, Eastveldt, Riddim Squad, Flamingo, Pele and Santos. Group-B features Western Tigers, Guyana Police Force (GPF), GFC, Camptown, Beacons and Black Pearl. Upon the completion of the group round, the elimination stage will commence.
The winning team will receive $1,000,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth placed finishers will pocket, $400,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
