The Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) has shortlisted four athletes to represent Guyana at the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) World Track and Field Championships including Olympian Winston George who reportedly was having visa issues.
According to president of the association, Aubrey Hutson, triple jumper Troy Doris, quarter-milers, George and Kadecia Baird along with 100 and 200m sprinter, Brenessa Thompson, will be considered to don the colors of the Golden Arrowhead at the meet scheduled for August 4-13 in London, England.
Hutson said that the governing body has issued the AAG with two tickets while the association will have to blanket the cost of the remaining athlete/s selected.
The AAG head further disclosed that the composition of the team will officially be made known later today following a meeting by the selection committee.
Hutson also revealed that “all the visa issues have been cleared up with George,” after it was reported that the athlete had not made himself available to produce the necessary information required on the visa application form.
Doris placed seventh at last year’s Olympics in Brazil and will be the best bet for Guyana to medal at the prestigious biennial event. George, a two-time Olympian, lowered the national 400m record on Saturday with a scorching 45.16s run en route to a 200/400m double at the Aliann Pompey Invitational meet at the National Track and Field Centre at
Leonora.
Thompson, an Olympian last year, along with Baird, had less than stellar performances at the same meet. Both stated that they had a bad day at the office. The USA-based duo will be looking to impress once picked for the August fixture.
