The ongoing problems at Guyana Power and Light (GPL) have led to blackouts across the city and along the coast today.
In recent months GPL has been hit by shutdowns of its Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System. Today’s outages appear to be of the same type.
The government has come under severe criticism for its inability to ensure reliable supply from GPL.
GPL this afternoon issued the following statement:
At approximately 08:15 hrs this morning; a fallen suspension insulator on a 69Kv transmission line in Sophia resulted in fault conditions on three transmission lines, causing electricity interruptions in Demerara and Berbice.
Restorative efforts commenced around 09:00hrs and all affected customers were repowered by 12:00 hrs with the exception of customers in Lamaha Gardens and Sophia to Success, ECD. The extended delay was due to remedial work on the structure bearing the damaged line hardware which concluded around 13:00hrs. The residual customers were repowered at 13:30 hrs.
GPL Inc. regrets the inconvenience caused. The Company also takes this opportunity to assure customers that significant resources are being directed towards addressing the vulnerability of the transmission network to faults of this nature.
