Defending men’s Open singles champion Alex Arjoon, Richard Chin, Kristian Jeffrey and Nyron Joseph secured their semifinal berths when the Digicel 2017 Senior National Squash Championships continued on Thursday at the Georgetown Club courts.
The much anticipated showdown between World ranked female player Nicolette Fernandes and the defending champion Arjoon, turned out to be a straight sets win for the champion who defeated Fernandes 11 – 5, 11 – 9, 11 – 1.

Chin, another favourite for the men’s singles crown, brushed aside the challenge of Jean Claude Jeffrey 11 – 6, 11 – 4, 11 – 2 while, Joseph upset Jason Ray Khalil 9-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-6.
In the women’s section, top seed Fernandes eased past Makeda Harding 11 – 1, 11 – 5, 11 – 1 while defending champion Ashley Khalil downed Sarah Lewis 11 – 3, 11 – 3, 11 – 2.
Former champion Mary Fung A Fat defeated Rebecca Low 11 – 4, 11 – 0, 11 – 4 while Taylor Fernandes defeated Victoria Arjoon 11 – 6, 13 – 11, 11 – 5.
In the Men’s Plate, Nicholas Narain came from behind to defeat Regan Pollard 9 – 11, 8 – 11, 11 – 3, 11 – 3, 11 – 4 while Ben Mekdeci overcame Peter Michael De Groot 11 – 5, 9 – 11, 11 – 2, 11 – 4.
In the men’s veterans 35 – 49 division, Allan Downes defeated Robin Low 11 – 4, 12 – 10, 11 – 4 and Khalil Alli beat Medhi Ramdhani 11 – 5, 11 – 2, 11 – 8. In the men’s veterans Over 50 section, Joe Mekdeci defeated David Fernandes 8 – 11, 11 – 2, 11 – 7, 11 – 3.
Play continues at 6.00 pm today with semi final matches in the men and women’s Open, men’s Plate second round matches and round robin play in the men’s veteran categories. The final matches in all of the categories will start tomorrow at 4.30 pm.
