The Hamilton Green Cup football tournament got off to the worst possible start Friday when rain washed out the opening night fixtures at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Linden.
Lennox Arthur, Coordinator of the tournament during an invited comment said: “The teams were ready to play but the rain came and the matches could not be played. Not sure when they (matches) will be played, I will know after Sunday.”
The opening fixture was set to pit Linden giant Milerock against Kuru-Kururu from 18:00hrs. The second showdown was Silver Shattas, another Linden side, battling Soesdyke Falcons from 20:00hrs.
The event is set to resume today at the Victoria Community Center ground with a triple-header. At 16:00hrs, Grove Hi-Tech will match skills with newcomers Mahaicony Thunder Hawks while Riddim Squad will face-off with Mahaica Determinators from 18:00hrs.
The final showdown of the night will bring together Pele FC and Ann’s Grove at 20:00hrs. Up to press time, three matches were underway at the Victoria Community Center ground.
Plaisance was down to face East Berbice outfit Cougars while Golden Grove was scheduled to tackle West Demerara side Golden Warriors. In the final showdown, Buxton Stars was programmed to battle Pouderoyen FC.
The winning team will receive $500,000 and the Minister of Citizenship Trophy while the runners-up will pocket $250,000 and the Busta Trophy and the third place finisher $150,000 and the John Fernandes Trophy. The fourth place finisher will walk away with $100,000 and the Cummings Electrical Trophy.
